Born under the dictator rule of General Tito, from a Croatian mother and an East German father, Rene De La Soyo cherished his freedom in his beloved Australia when he migrated to Melbourne after the fall of the Berlin Wall and thus the end of the Soviet regime.

In 2009 he turned his apartment located on top of the infamous Eurotrash that he created a few years earlier into a reminiscent of his childhood. A place where freedom meets subjection and where capitalism meets communism.

Thirteen years later, Berlin Bar still stands and cherishes the same idea of freedom as his departed creator. The events that are unfolding today in Europe must remind us that freedom and democracy cannot be taken for granted.
